The Short Answer Nobody Wants to Hear

It depends. But here's the thing — in about 70% of the applications we quote, the right choice is obvious once you understand what each robot actually does well. The other 30%? That's where experience matters.

A 6-axis articulated robot gives you six degrees of freedom — it can reach around, over, and under obstacles. A SCARA (Selective Compliance Articulated Robot Arm) gives you four axes optimized for fast, precise planar motion. They're fundamentally different tools, and picking the wrong one costs you cycle time, floor space, or both.

How 6-Axis and SCARA Robots Actually Differ

Degrees of Freedom and Workspace

A 6-axis robot moves like a human arm. Six joints let it approach a part from virtually any angle, which matters when you're loading a CNC chuck from the side or welding a complex joint geometry. The workspace is roughly spherical, and most models can reach behind themselves — useful in tight cells.

SCARA robots work in a cylindrical envelope. They're rigid in the Z-axis (vertical) but compliant in X and Y, which is exactly what you want for inserting components, driving screws, or pick-and-place on a flat surface. Think of it as an arm that moves fast across a table but doesn't need to flip upside down.

Speed and Cycle Time

This is where SCARA robots pull ahead — dramatically. A typical Epson T6 SCARA completes a standard pick-and-place cycle in 0.29 seconds. Try that with a 6-axis robot and you're looking at 0.5 to 0.8 seconds for the same motion. That gap adds up fast on a line running 200,000 parts per shift.

SCARA robots achieve this speed because they carry less inertia. The motors don't have to swing heavy links through complex arcs. The motion path is simpler, the acceleration is higher, and the settle time is shorter.

But speed only matters on the right application. A SCARA can't reach inside a machine tool or orient a part at 45 degrees for a welding torch. If your process demands complex tool-path orientation, a 6-axis robot running at "slow" 0.8-second cycles still beats a SCARA that literally can't do the job.

Repeatability and Precision

Both types offer excellent repeatability, but the numbers differ. High-end SCARA robots (Epson G-series, FANUC SR-series) hit ±0.01 mm repeatability. That's exceptional for electronics assembly where you're placing 0402 SMD components or inserting connectors with 0.1 mm clearance.

6-axis robots typically land at ±0.02 to ±0.05 mm depending on size. The FANUC LR Mate 200iD achieves ±0.01 mm, but it's a small robot. Larger 6-axis models with 1400 mm+ reach will be in the ±0.05 mm range — still excellent, just not SCARA-level for planar tasks.

Payload and Reach

Here's where 6-axis robots dominate. SCARA models max out around 20 kg payload (the FANUC SR-20iA), and most top out at 3–6 kg. Reach is typically 200–1000 mm.

6-axis robots? You can get payload ratings from 0.5 kg up to 2300 kg (FANUC M-2000iA). Reach extends from 400 mm to over 4700 mm. If you're palletizing 25 kg cases or tending a press brake, SCARA isn't even in the conversation.

When to Choose a SCARA Robot

SCARA is the right call when your application checks these boxes:

  • Motion is primarily horizontal — parts move across a surface, not through 3D space
  • Cycle time pressure is extreme — you need sub-0.5-second cycles
  • Payload is under 6 kg — the sweet spot for SCARA economics
  • Precision matters in X/Y — connector insertion, screw driving, dispensing
  • Floor space is tight — SCARA robots have a tiny footprint relative to their reach

Typical SCARA wins include electronics assembly (PCB handling, component insertion), pharmaceutical blister packing, small-part sorting, and semiconductor wafer handling. We've seen SCARA cells running consumer electronics lines where the robot does 40 picks per minute, all day, with zero quality escapes.

When to Choose a 6-Axis Robot

Go 6-axis when the application needs:

  • Complex orientations — the tool must approach from multiple angles
  • 3D workspace — loading parts into machines, bin picking, welding
  • Heavy payloads — anything over 10 kg pushes you toward 6-axis
  • Process flexibility — the cell might run different part families next year

6-axis robots own applications like machine tending (CNC load/unload, press brake, injection molding), arc welding, material removal (deburring, grinding), and palletizing. If you need a robot to pick a part from a conveyor, flip it 90 degrees, load it into a lathe chuck, close the door, and hit cycle start — that's a 6-axis job.

The Cost Question

SCARA robots cost less — sometimes significantly. A capable 4-axis SCARA (Epson T3, FANUC SR-3iA) runs $15,000–$25,000 for the arm. An equivalent-reach 6-axis robot (FANUC LR Mate, ABB IRB 1200) is $30,000–$50,000.

But the arm is only part of the cost. End effectors, mounting, guarding, programming, and integration often exceed the robot price. And a SCARA's simpler motion means shorter programming time and easier path optimization.

The real cost question isn't "which robot is cheaper?" It's "which robot delivers the lowest cost per part?" A $20,000 SCARA running at 30 parts per minute beats a $40,000 6-axis running at 18 parts per minute — and costs half as much upfront.

Making the Decision

Start with your process requirements, not the robot. Map out the motion your application demands: Is it planar or 3D? What's the cycle time target? How heavy are the parts? How much floor space do you have?

If the answer is "fast, flat, and light," go SCARA. If it's "complex, heavy, or flexible," go 6-axis. And if you're on the fence, talk to an integrator who's built both types of cells. The wrong robot choice shows up as missed cycle times, awkward workarounds, and regret at SOP.
