Instead, design the changeover process as a documented, practiced procedure with checklists, poka-yoke verification, and time targets. Many contract manufacturers apply SMED (Single-Minute Exchange of Die) principles to their automated cells and achieve changeovers in under 10 minutes.
Build in capacity headroom. A flexible system should never be loaded to 100% capacity. Leave room for rush orders, engineering changes, and new product introductions. If every hour is spoken for, there is no flexibility left—just a bottleneck with a robot in it.
