Integration Challenges to Expect
Don't underestimate the data plumbing. Most factories run a patchwork of equipment from different decades. Getting a 2005-vintage Mazak CNC, a 2015 KUKA robot, and a 2024 Omron cobot all feeding data into a unified cloud platform requires serious OT/IT convergence work.
You'll need OPC UA gateways, MQTT brokers, and probably some custom protocol adapters. AWS offers IoT Greengrass for edge connectivity, but someone still has to configure the data mappings. A shop running Allen-Bradley PLCs will have a different integration path than one running Siemens S7 controllers.
Security is the other elephant in the room. Manufacturing data — cycle times, reject rates, process recipes — is competitive intelligence. Before shipping it to any cloud provider, you need clear data governance policies. AWS offers VPC isolation and encryption at rest, but your IT team (or your MSP) needs to configure it properly. If you're still running manual data entry on clipboards, AWS Industrial ML won't help you. Start with the basics — instrument your equipment, digitize your quality records, and build a data infrastructure that can feed any analytics platform. That foundation pays dividends whether you end up on AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
For shops already running connected automation, this is worth evaluating. The pre-built models significantly reduce time-to-value compared to custom ML development. And the pay-as-you-go model means you can pilot on one line before committing to a plant-wide rollout.
