Cognex just released ViDi EL — an edge-learning vision inspection platform that does something the machine vision industry has been chasing for years: it makes deep learning inspection accessible to engineers who aren't data scientists. And that's a bigger deal than it sounds, because the gap between "deep learning can detect this defect" and "we can actually deploy deep learning on our production line" has been enormous.

Here's the problem ViDi EL solves. Traditional rule-based vision systems (the kind most factories run today) work great for structured inspections — verifying a barcode is present, checking that a connector has the right number of pins, measuring a dimension. But they fall apart on cosmetic defects, surface anomalies, and anything where "good" versus "bad" is subjective or highly variable. Scratches on a machined surface. Discoloration on a painted part. Runs on the camera itself. ViDi EL processes inference directly on Cognex's In-Sight smart cameras. No separate PC, no edge server, no cloud connection. The camera captures the image, runs the AI model, and outputs a pass/fail result — all within the camera's standard cycle time. Cognex familiar interface. If your engineers already use In-Sight EasyBuilder or Cognex Designer, the ViDi EL tools live inside the same environment. No new software platform to learn. Give them a standalone Python-based deep learning framework and it'll sit on a shelf.

Where This Fits on the Factory Floor

The sweet spot for ViDi EL is inspections that have been too difficult (or too expensive) to automate with traditional rule-based vision. Every factory has them — the inspection stations where you've got an operator staring at parts under a light, making subjective pass/fail calls that vary by person and by shift.

Surface defect detection. Scratches, dents, stains, porosity on cast parts, tool marks on machined surfaces. These defects look different every time, making rule-based detection unreliable. Deep learning handles the variability because it learns what "good" looks like rather than trying to define every possible defect pattern. Applications across machine vision inspection lines benefit immediately.

Assembly verification. Checking that all components are present, correctly oriented, and properly seated. A connector that's half-inserted, a gasket that's slightly misaligned, a clip that didn't fully engage — these are the defects that cause warranty claims. ViDi EL can learn to spot them from a handful of examples showing correct assemblies.

Print and label inspection. OCR (optical character recognition) has been in machine vision for decades, but reading degraded, poorly printed, or partially obscured text has always been a pain point. Edge learning handles these cases more robustly than traditional OCR algorithms because it adapts to your specific printing quality rather than relying on generic character models.

Weld inspection. This is a particularly strong application. Weld quality assessment has traditionally required destructive testing (cross-sectioning) or specialized NDT (non-destructive testing) equipment. Visual weld inspection by AI won't replace those methods for critical welds, but it can screen out obviously bad welds before they reach final inspection — reducing the workload on your QC team and catching gross defects earlier in the process.   5. Deploying to production hardware and integrating with the line PLC

Total timeline: 4-8 weeks for a typical application. With ViDi EL, steps 1-3 collapse into a single session: capture 5-20 example images, label them on the camera's interface, and train the model in minutes. Validation and deployment are still required, but the front-end work drops from weeks to a day. What It Doesn't Do

Let's be realistic about the limitations. Edge learning is intentionally constrained. It won't handle:

  • Highly complex classification tasks with many categories (more than ~10 classes)

  • Applications with extreme variability that needs a large, diverse training dataset
  • Tasks where you need to understand why the model made a decision (explainability is limited)

For those applications, you still need a full deep learning platform — Cognex's own ViDi Suite, or third-party tools like MVTec HALCON's deep learning module.
