Vision system architecture simplifies. Instead of a separate industrial PC running vision software and communicating results to the robot controller via Ethernet, the vision processing can run directly on an edge module mounted inside or next to the robot controller cabinet. Fewer components, fewer communication links, fewer failure points. Companies like Cognex and Keyence still offer their own processing, but more integrators are building custom vision pipelines on NVIDIA Jetson or similar platforms for flexibility.

Robot controllers are getting smarter. FANUC, ABB, and KUKA are all integrating edge AI capabilities into their latest controller generations. This means the robot itself becomes the AI platform, rather than needing external compute infrastructure.

Software becomes the differentiator. When the hardware is capable enough, the value shifts to the software — the neural network architectures, training pipelines, and application-specific algorithms. Integrators who develop proprietary AI models for specific manufacturing applications (assembly verification, surface inspection, process optimization) gain a competitive edge. It's no longer just about mechanical design and robot programming. It's about the intelligence layer.
