Yaskawa Motoman demonstrated something at FABTECH that should get every fabrication shop's attention: a welding robot that learns optimal parameters by watching an expert welder work. Not by having a programmer manually enter wire feed speed, voltage, travel speed, and torch angle for every joint type — but by observing a skilled human welder run a few demonstration passes and extracting the parameters automatically.
This is a fundamentally different approach to robotic weld programming. And it solves a problem that's been holding back welding automation for decades.
The Programming Problem in Robotic Welding

Why This Matters Beyond Yaskawa
Yaskawa isn't the only company pursuing AI-assisted weld programming. FANUC has been developing similar capabilities through their iRVision weld sensing platform. ABB's RobotStudio now includes simulation-based weld parameter optimization. Lincoln Electric's collaborative welding systems use real-time monitoring to suggest parameter adjustments.
But Yaskawa's learn-from-demonstration approach stands out because it captures something the other methods don't: the tacit knowledge of experienced welders. The system still needs expert welders for demonstrations. This isn't a replacement for welding expertise — it's a multiplier. Material and joint variety matters. The AI needs demonstration data for each material type, thickness range, and joint configuration. A structural steel shop running primarily 1/4" fillet welds on A36 can get productive quickly with a small demonstration library. A job shop welding stainless, aluminum, carbon steel, and Inconel across 200 part numbers will need a more extensive training period.
It doesn't eliminate offline programming entirely. Robot path programming — teaching the arm where to go — still requires traditional methods (teach pendant or offline programming software). The AI handles weld parameters, not motion paths. Though Yaskawa's integration with MotoSim simulation software means you can combine AI-optimized parameters with simulated paths for a complete offline programming workflow.
Sensor hardware is required. The real-time adaptive layer needs through-arc sensing (built into Yaskawa's welding packages) and ideally a laser seam tracker (additional cost of $15,000-$30,000). Without the adaptive layer, you get the benefit of AI-optimized parameters but lose the ability to compensate for part-to-part variation.
The Bigger Picture

The technology is mature enough for production welding — robots have been welding cars and heavy equipment for 40 years. The bottleneck has always been programming complexity and the need for specialized expertise to set up and maintain weld cells.
