Its corrosion resistance and mechanical properties make it the default choice for environments where carbon steel simply will not survive. But those same properties that make stainless steel valuable also make it more difficult to weld consistently.

When welding disrupts that layer without proper protection, you get carbide precipitation, sensitization, and eventually intergranular corrosion right in the heat-affected zone. For resistance welding applications on sheet metal, post-weld treatment is typically simpler because the process produces less surface disruption than arc welding. But for TIG and MIG welds on stainless, some form of post-weld treatment should be specified for any application where corrosion resistance matters.
Heat tint (the blue, straw, or purple discoloration adjacent to the weld) is more than cosmetic. The color indicates the thickness of the oxide layer, and heavier oxides reduce corrosion resistance.
