Project Overview
Launching a new transmission program is a high-stakes endeavor. When a Tier 1 powertrain supplier won a major OEM contract, they needed an assembly line with error-proofing on every critical operation—all within an existing facility with limited floor space.
AMD Machines designed a high-density assembly line with 32 robot stations in a compact footprint, with error-proofing and data collection built into every station.
Compact Cell Design
Space efficiency was critical. Our engineering team developed innovative cell layouts:
Dual-Robot Stations
Cells are configured with two robots working opposite sides of the pallet simultaneously.
Overhead Services
Utilities, cables, and conveyors routed overhead keep the floor clear for maintenance access while maximizing usable space.
Integrated Buffers
Strategic buffer stations decouple individual cells for maintenance.
Critical Fastening Operations
Transmission assembly requires precise torque control on multiple fasteners:
- DC electric tools with closed-loop torque control
- Angle monitoring verifies proper seating
- Automatic documentation for every fastener
Any out-of-spec torque immediately flags the unit and halts production at that station.
01The Challenge
A Tier 1 powertrain supplier needed to launch a new transmission program with error-proofing on every critical operation and a minimal footprint in an existing facility.
- Launch of a new OEM transmission program
- Short takt time for a complex, multi-operation assembly
- Floor space limited to existing building footprint
- Multiple torque-critical fastening operations
- Unit-level traceability for warranty and recall support
02Our Solution
AMD Machines designed a compact, high-density assembly line with 32 robot stations performing simultaneous operations, integrated error-proofing, and comprehensive data collection.
Multi-Robot Assembly Cells
Compact cells with multiple robots working simultaneously in a compact footprint.
Precision Fastening Systems
DC electric torque tools with angle monitoring monitor torque and angle on every critical fastener.
Integrated Leak Testing
In-line pressure decay testing verifies seal integrity before components proceed downstream.
Real-Time Quality Monitoring
Every operation tracked and verified with automatic production hold for out-of-spec conditions.
03The Results
AMD Machines built the transmission line as 32 robot stations with DC torque fastening, in-line pressure decay leak testing and vision inspection, with every operation tracked and verified and an automatic production hold for out-of-spec conditions.
